Dragon's Egg
When asked what my favorite kind of story is, I would be prone to name works like The Neverending Story by Michael Ende, Little Nemo in Slumberland by Winsor McCay or Brave Story by Miyuki Miyabe (which I admit I have only seen the animated movie version of so far). As clichéd as the premise of a modern day kid to enter the domains of a fantasy world may be, I adore the idea of a lush and imaginative realm experienced through the eyes of childlike innocence.

I completed a short story in a similar spirit with a little help from Clay Gardner, and you can read it here:

It started out with a small request: I wanted to stray away from my usual color work to do a couple of greyscale toned manga pages and asked Clay to write it. The original plan was to have no more than 4-5 pages, but the thing just kept growing in my mind as I read through the script. I was hooked. Once I got started, I finished the whole comic in little over a week.

As for the dragon's egg, its very existence will bring about much joy...and much grief. But this is not for our little hero to worry, for by then, this enchanted jewel will have long escaped his grasp into the hands of another.

But that's a story for another time.

BRAVO!!

NIKO and CLAY! Once again, you blow everything out of the water with your A-MA-ZING talent.

What I find remarkable is how much texture and depth you get with BLACK AND WHITE!!
I love the design of the dragon. He's stunning and unique. Heck, everything is wonderful about this- the layouts, the panels, the expressions, the balloons. I love the dialogue of the dragon. And of course everyone loves a conundrum. ;-)

Thank you for sharing this here!! ^_^

P.s. Art slump. YEEEAAAAAHHHHH....

Thanks for the elaborate praise! I'm glad you enjoyed it.

The idea was to test the black and white waters, so I'm delighted that people are liking the tones. I think for a bigger project I would definitely simplify the process though (e.g. more white space and flats) -- especially when working on a deadline.

Beautiful work with the grayscale! The art really brings out the feeling of wonder and mystery in the story.

Man, if he's that stumped by "What came first, the chicken or the egg?" I'd hate to see how he'd react to "What is the sound of one hand clapping?" XD

It feels more like an excerpt or epilogue than a self contained story, but it's still cute. I love the dragon and the grey scale is very nice. My one nit pick is the shadows in the center of the pages. I know you're trying to achieve a "book" quality, but it just seems strange to me. Especially on the nice spread on page two.

Yup, that was exactly the idea! We wanted to make Dragon's Egg look like part of something bigger. There are many questions left unanswered about the boy's past and future adventures: Where did he get his sword and how did he learn to swing it? What happened to the elven princess he rescued -- and how did she end up needing saving in the first place? But I think the comic can still be enjoyed on its own.

As for the book shadow effect, I see what you mean. However, I wanted the adjacent pages to be displayed in the same window, and it looked just weird without some sort of separator. It's just in the web version anyway -- the print resolution files are clean.

It's hard to relate to the characters without the rest of the story, but I understand where you're coming from. :)

As for the shadow, maybe just take it out on the spread? I just think it's a shame that there's a line down the middle.

Try refreshing your browser now -- I changed it to display bigger versions of the single pages instead. If nothing else, it makes the lettering more readable. Thanks for the input!

wow, awesome! Really good job guys :D
You should team up on more little shorts like this, maybe put them together as a book if you can finish enough.

I'm jealous 'cause every time I try and make a short comic it tends to spin off into a massive epic :P

beautiful job, thanks for sharing!

Did you buy Brave Story or download it? I really want to see it but the only DVD of it I could find online was the wrong format D:

As far as I know, the DVD is not available in America yet -- let alone here in Germany. It seems like VIZ Media is releasing an English translation of the novel this summer though!

I was happy when he decided not to break the egg:-)

That huge two-page picture is the coolest. The dragon looks so massive and ancient in it. And that world of anti-gravity rocks at the end really makes me want to see more. So much fun could happen in a place like that:-)

I love when you two work together. An epic story, no matter how short it is, is always born. Your child-like, vivid imagination with Clay's talent of turning a raw idea in an incredible script is outstanding. I envy how you two can work so well together. Not many can form a pair of talent like you both.

If you permit me a small question, I'd love to know how do you plan your panel layout. Do you use Painter for it? Oh, and, another thing... The speech ballons. You have to tell me how you do it!

I'm glad you enjoyed it, and thank you very much for the kind words!

I do my panel layouts before I start on the actual line art. Generally speaking, I use angular frames that don't distract for emotional or quiet moments, and dynamic, multi-layered compositions for action scenes with an impact. That's all theory though, I usually just go for what looks good.

There are some artists (Yuji Iwahara comes to mind) who do multiple volumes of manga without so much as a single diagonal line in their panel layouts and still retain a highly dynamic art style, but I've personally always been a fan of crazy layouts. I want to do a project with nothing but rectangle paneling sometime though, in order to focus on the art alone for dynamism.

As for the lettering, it's really just selections and the fill/stroke option. For the dragon's balloons, I just added some squiggly lines by hand.

The author of V for Vendetta comic also did all his panels rectangular. It's actually a very interesting visual, especially because of the colors he uses, but I reckon it must be a hard thing to do. :)

As always Inês, you're too kind. But I'm glad you enjoyed the story and appreciate the work we put into it.

But actually, I have a question for you! Would you be interested in checking a few lines of Portuguese I wrote for Green? No long dissertations or anything. ;)

Sure, no problem. I'd be delighted to help. I won't be on this weekend, though, only later on Saturday (well, probably not that late for you, seeing as we have very different time schedules). Ah, and I changed my AIM adress to zombie nessy. You still have your old one? :)

Wow, not much I can say that hasn't already been said, all of what was though is included, but this is pretty awesome, and for a short story it was very good. I loved the chicken and the egg question being used here and I wish you could do some more, as you said yourself, so much has been left unanswered, but that is a story for another time. One I would very much like to read, but for now I'll leave it up to my imagination and thank you for sharing this excellent piece of work with everyone.
